I reviewed the original on here a couple of weeks ago to which i greatly enjoyed starting nicole de boer and david hewlett however this was made 5 years after the original, and it had a new cast a new cube and a new writer, the film starts off in a very similar way with total strangers being trapped in a cube with doors into another cube and they have to try and escape. but this time the cube has changed its well its a HYPERCUBE
however this version differs strongly with what happened in the first one i am starting to think for any of this to happen they would have to break 27 different laws of physics but more of that later, first of all i did enjoy this film although this was noticeably poorer than the first one which had a logic puzzles to solve random traps that would just kill people and you never knew what was going to kill people in each room this version tries to freak your mind out by having elements such as parallel dimensions time travel and anti gravity that were meant to scare people, so i asked my self would i be scared of meeting a future version of my self ? no, would i fear being in anti gravity ? no and would i fear meeting my self from an alternate dimension again no this is were the film screws up we wanted things like a room full of spears if you fell from the top. there are some traps that kill people but i have no fucking idea what they are seeing as they thought lets just do something with CGI to make us look cool and edgy.
the characters are also a great irritation to me mainly in this and a lot of what they did made no sense for example one bloke just killing the same bloke 7 times was pretty hmmmm whats the point and stealing the same watch, once again there was someone with a disability in this film who has an extra sense and also leads to the clue for the woman to get out, i cant remember many of the other characters that well there was an old woman who wound me up also there was two young people who basically ended up dyeing with each other in another fit of CGI rage upon the screen.
the end culminates in the numbers that we have been seeing all throughout the entire film means a time were you have to jump out of a whole make no sense and then the woman was actually a plant but who by the evil cooperation ? we dont know well according to wikipedia there was an alternative ending in which ‘ In the alternate ending it is revealed to Kate that she was in the Hypercube for just six minutes and 59 seconds. The cube is owned by the government. It was an experiment used for quantum teleportation.’
Overall this was a good way to enjoy 90 odd mins watching sci fi but the first film is a much better option unless you are trying to work your way through the entire cube universe
