Doctor who – Evacuation Earth – Review

Its a Doctor who game off course i was going to play through it.  I picked this game up for quite cheap based on things I had heard and stuff,  I had brought this game back in febuary but then managed to break my DS and have only recently got round to repairing it. when I got home from work their was a nice shiny nintendo box with my ds in so I decided to continue where I got up to in this game.

Essentially this game is done a professor layton feel style however it is a much poorer version of the game however if this style of game was worked on better then it is the ideal way A doctor who game should be played in my mind . with a lot of the puzzles often feel repetitive, combined with some poor controls often lead to a very boring and unsatisfying experience. Most of the puzzles arent that hard but they are just frustrating, when you have poor controls  and some badly thought out puzzles for example their was one odd one out where i spotted something other than the 3 standard odd ones out, also the most frustrating thing in the entire game are those sliding picture puzzles now there are only 2 of them but simply how they can expect any child to be able to complete these with out going nuts is beyond me.

The stroy line is its self quite short in  a way and left me feeling some what un satisfied, and perhaps I would have preferred a more in depth or deeper storyline, this could have been done if there had been more cut scenes with in the game. or just a means for better story telling, as the climax for the game is all to very sudden and short and left me with a feeling of ‘oh is that it ‘ which is not the desired effect for a game. it does also feel that there are to many villans that are shoe horned into the game for no real reason and it just feels cramped.

Also who ever designed amy pond in the game i want them to go back and draw her so she looks in the game as hot as she is in real life. mmmmm * goes off into a day dream about amy pond and her short short skirts*, but it was nice to have this level of voice acting for a DS game.

so back to the game its not that good if you are a who fan like me and want to play the game then don’t pay a lot for it as its not really worth it but hey its still who and giving me my fix of it until the new series starts on the 23rd of april. overall this games poor controls puzzle repetition just bring the game down.  anyway i’d give this game an D-

Games I Have been playing this week

ok this week I have found my self playing a few various games so here we go.

1) portal – when i first put in the orange box in the ps3 most peoples reaction I guess would be to go down the half life 2 route I on the other hand wanted to try Portal out, and played my way through it and loved it

2) Assassins creed brotherhood –  i Loved assasins creed 2 and played it a lot and almost got every trophy the only thing i didint get was every feather ( no great loss their then ), so the story line still carrys on from number 2 and it is great to be able to go around rome, it seems slightly diffrent to be in just one big city all the time rather than travelling between 2 or 3 villages, im glad they kept the elements where you can buy and renovate building and are able to create a financial empire, both of the story lines in the games are enjoyable.

3) Fifa 111 – see last week

4) Super mario RPG – I only downloaded this the other day and think that really I have only played about 40 mins of the game, but it seems good and enjoyable and I haven’t found my self getting lost around the mushroom kingdom pimping my self out to the local toads for the hope of a fireflower yet  or a map yet, which I always find is a plus when playing a video game.

Portal

Right the other day i picked up the Orange box on the ps3 ( for those who don’t Know its 5 games in one box 3 half life ones, portal and team fortress) So first of all with all these options i decided to go down the Portal Route. I had heard some good things about this it seems to be in some forms a cult classic to such an extent that there is a sequel to it coming soon.

How I would describe this game is that it is a first person puzzle game in which you have some weird gun that shoots entrances and exits it is definitely a different take on the fps genre and it is enjoyable the graphics are good the story line is ok, it sure could be a bit stronger as you dont really notice anything about it really till test 18. but its just such a unique game where you have to use your brain to try and solve the problems that are placed in front of you.

The Game does have a feel that reminds me of the film the cube to it in some regards, in the way that you are having to solve some problems to get out of rooms that lead to extra rooms. without any real knowledge about what is going on . or who is behind the entire test. which does appeal to me a lot as the cube is one of my favourite films out there and not just for the gorgeous Nicole deboer.

On the downside the game is quite short i think i completed it in about 3 and a half hours and didn’t really have many problems in terms of the difficulty of the game, i only found it had began to get a little bit tricky towards the end of the game.

so yeah if you get the orange box then i would definitely advise you try out this rare gem of a game which is truly different and just play and enjoy it sure it maybe a bit short but the game is well worth playing. 8/10

Games I have been Playing

1) Fifa 11 – football fun a bit mindless but a good way for me to relax

2) Game development story- this game is addictive as hell i downloaded it onto my phone for about a £1 the other week and when i first downloaded it spent what felt like the entire day just playing the game ignoring everything it is just such a great mobile game, you create your team to build the best games ever and have to recruit people decide what types of games and what consoles you want to produce for.

3) new super mario bros wii – just a great fun 2d mario game which is awesome to play through.

on the Horizon – assassins creed 2 brotherhood & The orange box

Battle Los Angeles

WOW what a kick ass movie this is, I saw it the other day, I am normally a Huge fan of these style of Alien Invasion movies, I have watched independence day countless times and I was so hyped to go and see this.

The movie starts off with some unknown asteroids about to hit the earth however they would soon become the aliens that we are to fight, I liked the way at first we were not allowed to see the alien and what they looked like I thought it was a good technique as I was sitting there just wondering what the fuck these aliens looked liked, although when I first saw them I was somewhat disappointed by their design.

I did enjoy the pacing of this movie as it did feel like non stop action just giving you enough before the battle ending, I liked the way that the Aliens became progesivly stronger through out the movie such as first they had no air support then the aliens developed the air support etc. there was so many times during this movie i was just thinking to my self ‘ shit just got real’ . I thought the graphics and looks of the film did make it look quite realistic ( well as realistic as it gets when aliens come to earth and destroy loads of cities), also i found the soundtrack in this to be spot on and did its job at trying to convey what was going on in the film at the time

I suppose this film is going to be compared  most to is Independence day due to the nature of Aliens coming down and beating the hell out of planet earth where these films differ is that independence day is more about the people who are in charge of the operations where as this film is more about the ordinary marine trying to fight these aliens on the battlefield.  and their is no appearance of apple mac viruses

There where one or two things that confused me in this movie such as why on earth didnt the army use nukes to stop the aliens surely if you have a force that aggressive trying to attack you and you are having limited success with what you are using you would bring out the Big stuff they did it in independence day.  also early on in the film the captain discovers where it is best to aim and shoot the aliens to kill them at no point in the entire movie does he try and tell the rest of the army what he has found. which is just ridiculous.

Ok so in conclusion this film is no kings speach or strongly written together drama it is a pure action film that will be in a list of my guilty pleasures for movies right next to independence day, yes it does have so many clichés of characters and war movies but hell that is one of the reasons I loved this movie so much when I was watching it, it was just so good and felt so right for me.

Im going to give this film a 10/10 i just loved it to much i know its going to be one of those movies that some people will love to pan but I am just going to love it.

Games I’ve been playing

I thought I would run this feature hopefully weekly but then again who knows with me it maybemore erratic than waiting for a train in the north pole but anyway lets give it A try.

Ok so recently I have been of a bit of a retero buying spree sort of thing and when I say retro Iactually mean ps2 era games some of the fun good old games I didn’t play before
1) Madden 05 PS2 – when I was looking online kept finding most people where talking about
comparing every madden game to the 05 one and talking as if this was the pinnacle of all themadden franchise, so I ordered a cheap copy off ebay and began play, I found this game tobe very good I think I got more enjoyment out of this than 10+11 put together, it just feelsright I like the way they included historic teams and also the inclusion of the now disbandedNFL Europe was good to see, I found the game has good gameplay, and hey I was interestedin playing the mini games to unlock the card things. There are some minor gripes such asthe sprint button is not the same between attack and defend but other than that it’s a goodgame.

2) Destroy all Humans PS2 – This game has a very good look and feel to it that appeal to me set
in a 1950’s cheesy science fiction movie setting I was naturally interested in this howeverfor some reason its taken me about 6 years to pick up but I did and the copy I got looksnear mint condition which was very good, I also picked up the second game at the time butwanted to complete the first one first. I found the first game to be enjoyable although a littlebit to repetitive so far, but it still has a very nice feel to it and a good time wasting game ifyou just want to fly around a UFO blowing stuff up.

3) FIFA 11 probably a very regular feature to this list I just like playing games online and stuff.

4) Super Mario bros – the original one on the nes I have never completed this game and I want
to do so without using any of the warp pipes, so far I have only really been getting up toworld 7-1 , I normally go on a really good run and then make a series of silly mistakes butyeah this is great fun and I WILL Complete it one day

Doctor Who – Ace boxset

BBC just take my money.

yeah there are reports that coming soon there is an ACE dvd box set coming out, if such a thing does come out and it does look likely it is a day one for me ( well unless im in alcohol induced poverty ),

I hope they take the care and attention that they do normally on there dvds I could imagine some great interviews with sophie and sylv, and maybe expand one of the features they had on the Survival i think dvd set about season 27 where they talk about ace in that etc.  Also another feature on how various forms of media and how they have depicted ace and her exit

Also hopefully a booklet with the hottest pictures of ace
